Celebrating Unsung Heroes at the National Heroes Banquet

By Rosemarie G. Roth,  President (Former)
Jamaican Cultural Connection

On Saturday, October 21, 2023, Jamaican Cultural Connection, Inc. (JCC, Inc.) hosted the phenomenally successful “Let Your Light Shine” National Heroes Banquet, a night dedicated to celebrating unsung heroes who have made significant contributions to their communities and beyond. The event, held at Maison & Jardin Event Center, a venue in Altamonte Springs, Florida, brought together a diverse group of individuals eager to pay tribute to those who have quietly illuminated the lives of others.

The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the recognition of three remarkable individuals who have gone beyond in their respective fields, yet often remained in the shadows. Miss Victoria Mahabeer-Mathis and Phil & Shelly Peachey were the honorees, each with their unique and inspiring stories. Miss Victoria Mahabeer-Mathis feeds the homeless, with love, in her community. She has dedicated her life to supplying a meal for those less fortunate. During the banquet, Miss Victoria’s selflessness and dedication were celebrated with a moving tribute by Miss Yvonne Barnes. It brought applause, and tears to my eyes. Her unwavering commitment to serving others embodies the spirit of a true hero.

Phil and Shelly Peachey, husband-and-wife, have dedicated their lives to humanitarian work, with a particular focus on reaching children. The Peachey’s remarkable journey from England to America and Jamaica have had an impact on the children who have received bicycles and the families who received thanksgiving baskets. Phil and Shelly Peachey’s dedication to the well-being of others resonated deeply with the attendees when they spoke of the kid that brought his cousin back to them for a gift. His knowledge of patois was amusing.

Pastor Naomi Gayle presented Nanny of the Maroon with a cultural dance, Miss Lou, and a beauty queen. For the first time we heard that Nanny relied on blowing a shofar (a goat’s horn) to signal danger to her people.

In a heartwarming and inspiring speech, The Honorable Peter Gracey, the Global Jamaica Diaspora Council Representative of the Southern States, left an impression on those in attendance by sharing his poignant poem, “This is Jamaica,” and reciting “The Strength to Breathe” during a touching moment when he was presented with a plaque by Karen Lewin on behalf of JCC, Inc. as a token of appreciation.

MC Debbie Jarrett showed herself as a commander who has shown a remarkable ability to pilot this event with precision and finesse. This precision ensured that the event unfolded seamlessly, leaving an impression on all participants and guests.

In attendance at the event were three prominent organizations: the Jamaican American Association of Central Florida, the Caribbean American Chamber of Commerce, Volusia County and the Caribbean Rhythm Radio Network. These groups met for a collaborative, community-oriented purpose, strengthening their shared interests in promoting Caribbean culture, commerce, and community engagement in the Central Florida region.

In addition to honoring these unsung heroes, Sonny Wong and DJ Charlie Brown ensured that the event was filled with pulsating beats and infectious rhythms. The dance floor was alive with the sounds of reggae and Soca music, supplying the perfect backdrop for guests to let loose and celebrate the rich cultural heritage of Jamaica. As the night ended, it was clear that the event had achieved its goal of highlighting the importance of recognizing those who often go unnoticed. The power of music, culture, and the spirit of unity in Jamaica were on full display, leaving attendees with a sense of pride and gratitude for the heroes among us. This annual banquet encouraged everyone to let their light shine and, in doing so, illuminate the path to a brighter, more compassionate future.

An Elegant Evening to say the least!

With nearly 200 in attendance at this year’s Annual Heroes Banquet and Dance, the evening was filled with exuberance. Our keynote speaker, The Honorable Jamaican Consul General to Miami – Mr. R. Oliver Mair, eloquently addressed the gathering as he encouraged us to invest in the growth of the Homeland – Jamaica.

Other Highlights of the evening were the recognition and honoring of the Jamaican National Heroes, in addition, to our local Unsung Heroes – Veronica Dixon and Mr. & Mrs. Laughton Parchment.

JCC, Inc. Founder, the late Claudette Bailey was honored for her dedication and service to the organization. A Scholarship Fund was launched in her memory. The evening concluded with a season of dancing and socializing. What an awesome evening indeed.

THE STORY OF NICOLA ANNEMARIE BARNETT

Nicola Annemarie Barnett of Spaulding, Clarendon Jamaica was Born on May 3rd, 1995. As a Quadriplegic she has little to no support from those around her since the passing of her dear mother Nadine Barnett.

Sadly, in her helpless state it was discovered that she was enduring mental and physical abuse by heartless and mindless individuals.
